How to Stop a Puppy from Barking
Training a puppy or dog to stop barking can be very time consuming, expensive and very difficult for a new dog owner. One of the most rewarding experiences for a dog owner however is successfully training a puppy not to bark.
Usually, the most difficult aspect of puppy training is the fact that he is not with you all of the time. At night while you sleep and during the day while you are at work are the most critical times for barking problems. Training a puppy successfully takes constant and immediate correction of the problem and while you are out of the house, it is impossible for you to correct a barking puppy.
Our recommendation for this situation is to use a static anti-bark collar or an ultrasonic training device. These two items are the most effective in stopping a puppy from barking under any circumstances. Breeders often ask us which of these two is best for particularly stubborn breeds and our answer is always the anti-bark collar. These are used for any breed of dog with great success.
One important thing to remember is that most static bark collars cannot be used on small dogs that weigh less than 8lbs (3.6Kgs). In that particular case, where the owners pet is very small, we can only recommend one brand of pet collar. The bark control collar made by PetSafe called the Little Dog bark control collar. Dogs that weigh 5.5lbs (2.5Kgs) or more and that are more than six months old can safely use the Little Dog bark control collar. Nano technology is used to make the Little Dog Bark Collar the smallest electronic static bark collar available for pet owners and their puppies or small dog breeds.
For owners who do not want to use a static shock collar on their puppy or small breed of dog, we often recommend an ultrasonic bark free unit that will assist the pet owner in creating a bark free zone. These units listen for a puppy’s bark and in response, immediately emit an ultrasonic sound that is unpleasant for puppies to hear. Often, an ultrasonic bark free unit will train a puppy and eliminate nuisance barking in a matter of days. Some ultrasonic bark free units come with a manual button that allows the pet owner to use the unit to deter a puppy from other unwanted behaviour such as jumping on the furniture or chewing on your shoes!
Remember your dog has to be over six months old before using a bark collar or ultrasonic training device.
The one reported disadvantage of the ultrasonic unit is that loud noises and the barking of dogs nearby can set the unit off and punish your puppy even when it isn’t barking. These units work best when it is used in a controlled environment where other animals and loud noises like cars and trucks are unlikely to cause a false response and won’t confuse your pet or lessen the effectiveness of the unit.
There are many different brands and types of bark control collars and anti bark devices on the market, make sure that you buy a bark control collar or an ultrasonic bark free unit from a reputable brand named company like PetSafe or Koolatron instead of the cheapest one available. These brands offer customer support and clear well written instructions that you should be sure to read carefully! These reputable brands are more likely to be effective, safe, and reliable for you and your pet and will help you to achieve the bark free environment that you desire.
