How to Stop a Dog Barking!
When you first got your dog you may have been given instruction on proper feeding and care of your pet, but no one gave you an instruction manual about how to deal with habits your dog may have that will drive you, and your neighbors, crazy - like barking.
Barking is one of the biggest complaints about dogs. While your pet may have a number of nasty habits, the one that everyone can hear is the one they are going to complain about the most and that is your dogs endless barking.
From a dog's stand point of view, barking makes sense. They are communicating just like we do, although we don't necessarily understand the conversation. Yet, this is not always appropriate behavior and something must be done to stop excessive barking.
While some breeds are more prone to barking than others, all dogs tend to offer up a little noise now and then. It's when that barking never stops that it goes from being cute to a nightmare.
Begin by trying to discover why your dog is barking in the first place.
One of the possible options is that your dog has a complaint and is barking in disapproval, much as we would. Check to make sure he has adequate water and food. Do you have him outside? Perhaps the weather is uncomfortable.
Maybe, like whining children, your dog is merely bored with his current situation. Does he have enough toys and activities to keep him occupied?
This is especially common of pets that are left home while an owner goes to work. They don’t know what to do with their time when no one is around.
Other possible reasons your dog won't stop barking is that he feels as if he is not getting enough love and attention or he is frustrated because he is stuck inside the house, fence, etc and there are things he would like to be doing outside. Still other dogs bark because they feel threatened by their surroundings.
If the problem is one of lack of comfort on the part of your dog, you can remedy the barking by making sure he has food, water and other necessities.
Once those options are ruled out, it's time for some training. Your dog must learn that it is not acceptable to bark for attention whenever he wants it. If when he barks then stops you give him a treat, he is learning the wrong lesson. He is learning that barking gets results.
Many training tips on how-to teach a dog not to bark involve using treats as a reward, when the dog is quiet when instructed to be. This works to some extent but when you don't have treats in hand, it may be harder to get a positive response.
For many dogs, a treat system won't stop the barking. This is where an electronic static shock bark control collar may come into play. These bark collars are put on the dog to offer a mild corrective static shock.
The bark collar senses the vibration that is made when a dog barks and automatically responds to the bark by giving the dog an immediate minimal shock to let him know he should quit barking. While you may think an electronic bark collar is going to be hard to operate, in fact they are very easy. Just follow the simple instructions that come with the anti bark collar, put it on your pet, turn it on and hear the results.
The benefit of this type of anti bark treatment is that not only is it constant and immediate, but it also works even when you are not home to offer those treats to convince him to stop barking.
