Stop Your Dog Barking At Night!

Do you know why your dog is barking? There is likely a reason. Make sure all his needs are being met. Does he have food? Water? Does he need to go out? If the answer is none of these, you may just have a dog that's bored or needing attention and is going to bark until he gets what he wants.
This is something you can't tolerate and can't encourage. By giving in and giving your pet attention each time he barks, you are teaching him that he will get what he wants for his bad behavior. Attention is attention and even if it's negative attention, he still thinks he's getting his way.
The other problem with getting up to stop the barking is that you don't really want to get up in the middle of the night. You're snug in bed and the last thing you need is to have to walk across the cold floor and scold your pets.

Anti-Bark Collars
One solution is anti-bark collars. These collars are electronically controlled devices that are built into a collar that you put on your dog. The collar reacts to the vibration in dogs throat when it barks, and immediately gives a mild static shock to your dog's neck. This shock is a little startling and most dogs don't like it, so they will quit the activity that caused the shock. In this case, that means the barking will cease. Ultrasonic Units
Another option is a collar-free item that still reinforces the message to stop barking. Ultrasonic units are small devices that can be hung on the wall, set on the counter or put almost anywhere in the house. When your dog barks, the device picks-up the sound from the bark and sends out an ultrasonic tone. While humans can't hear the ultrasonic frequency, dogs can. The annoyance of the noise to their ears is enough to get them to stop once they figure out it's their barking that is causing the high-pitched sound.
